Schools need to prioritize equity and inclusion to provide the best education for all children.

What this means

  • The administration must continue following the 2021 Equity Audit with a comprehensive Equity Action Plan with specific steps.

  • All initiatives must include an evaluation plan to measure results.

  • Race- and gender-based bullying need to be addressed so all students feel safe at schools.

  • Our schools need to provide quality education for all students across a wide variety of needs. This includes

    • Special education and modified curriculum

    • Opportunities for English Language learners

    • Vocational education options for students who choose that path

    • Advanced curriculum for students who are not being served by grade-level content.

  • In all situations, create opportunities for Watertown students to feel part of one community.

Our teachers, aides, and other staff must have the skills and tools they need to meet the needs of all students, especially our most vulnerable.

What this means

  • Our teachers must have the capacity to do their best work without being overstretched.

  • Staff at all levels should have the training they need to best serve the specific population of students in their classrooms.

  • Staff experience is to be treated respectfully and considered in decision-making involving the school buildings programs, and the best interest of the students.

While it is critical for communication from schools to families to be accurate, timely, and complete, listening and responsiveness are crucial aspects of that communication.

What this means

  • Newsletters from schools and the administration continue to provide timely updates and announcements to families and the community.

  • Families should also be notified of changes to their children’s teachers and curriculum, as well as any substantial changes in how their day is structured.

  • Families, students, and faculty need venues to share concerns with school department leaders and decision makers, and should expect to receive a timely and meaningful response to those concerns.

  • The school administration should take advantage of knowledgeable and willing community members in formulating policy and developing programs for our schools and students.
